Aims of Biomakespace - vote on company objects

(Jenny Molloy) #1

Hi All

We need to list the aims of the Biomakespace for our constitution and potentially to include in the Articles of Association for the company, although this is not strictly necessary. So far we have the following on the website - does anyone have any additions or things they think are out of place?

  1. Bring together biologists, engineers, technologists and others for meeting and co-working in an informal and extra-institutional setting.
  2. Support new and existing interdisciplinary collaborations to engineer biology.
  3. Raise awareness of and skills for synthetic biology…
  4. Build a cross-disciplinary and cross-sector community for synthetic biology in Cambridge, with a focus on open technology and innovation.
  5. Provide activities such as training and skills sharing sessions, networking events and foster links with innovation and seed funding schemes and local bioincubator spaces and accelerator programmes.

Version 2 discussed this evening is shorter - other comments welcome!

  1. Bring together biologists, engineers, technologists and others in Cambridge for meeting, co-working and socialising in a creative, cross-disciplinary and safe community laboratory.
  2. Provide a well-equipped space for practical biology, engineering and biological engineering on a community membership basis.
  3. Support new and existing interdisciplinary collaborations to engineer biology, with a focus on promoting open technology and innovation.
  4. Raise awareness, understanding and engagement with biological engineering in the local Cambridge community through public engagement activities, training, networking and fostering links with other innovation organisations.

Following on from our discussion last night, the following words were suggested to be included in the aims of the organisation:

  • community-based
  • biology (as well as engineeering)
  • education
  • safe environment
  • innovation enterprise

The reworded objects are below - thanks everyone for your suggestions, comments and amendments! We’d now like to get some agreement in order to go ahead and set up the company, which needs to happen asap (at the start of next week).

##What are company objects?
They’re the high-level objectives of the Biomakespace that our income will be used to further and on winding up of the company, any assets must be donated to a charity or other non-profit organisation with similar objects. There will be clauses in the articles of association for the non-profit company limited by guarantee that state this (more info on CLGs).

##The proposed objects of Cambridge Biomakespace Ltd

  1. Bring together biologists, engineers, technologists and others in the Cambridge area for meeting, co-working and socialising in a creative, cross-disciplinary, community-driven and safe environment.
  2. Provide a well-equipped space for practical biology and engineering of biology on a community membership basis.
  3. Support new and existing interdisciplinary collaborations for engineering biology, with a focus on promoting open technology and innovation.
  4. Raise awareness, understanding and participation in biology and engineering of biology in the Cambridge area through public engagement activities, education and training.
  5. Foster links with local industry and innovation organisations, building bridges between academia and bioenterprise.
